Napoleonic Wargame Rules

Saturday, June 25, 2016. This is the first major update of the rules since they were written in 2011. The rules have been used on our wargames table on most days since they were first written. We normally play one campaign wargame each week, and each game lasts twelve moves. So the rules have been well play tested. They have stood the test of time with only minor adjustments. When the rules were written my wife and I were running a solo 1813 campaign. For example each campaign day was 12 hours long.

Revised Leon Campaign Strategic Map. Original Strategic Map of Leon Phase. Last week I explained that the strategic map was used for campaign movement and to illustrate daily locations on the campaign diary blog. I posted a copy of the latest map, which is above. When the campaign was PBEM I always used the wargames map, because it was important that each player could see in advance exactly what the wargames table would look like. Walking Germany

Tuesday, November 30, 2010. The battle of Leipzig was fought over the period 14-19 October 1813. It started with the largest cavalry battle in history, fought at Libertwolkwitz, followed by Wachau, Connewitz, Lindenau, Mockern and finally Leipzig itself. I have always found Leipzig to be one of the most difficult of all Napoleonic battles to grasp. The size of the battlefield, the armies involved, the number of combats within the battle all make it hard to understand. The monument dominates the city skyl.

Walking Italy

Tuesday, February 8, 2011. When Bonaparte drove the Austrian army out of northern Italy in early 1796 they left a strong garrison in the fortress of Mantua. The French laid siege to the city from May 1796 to February 1797. Castiglione, Caldiero, Arcola and Rivoli. It was only after the decisive defeat of the Austrian army at Rivoli that the garrison finally surrendered. Mantua was then, and is now,.

1813 Campaign - Hannover 2

Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Link to 1813 Tortosa Campaign. The next phase of the 1813 campaign will be in north east Spain and will deal with the Spanish attempt to take the city of Tortosa. I have started a new blog for that phase and you can find it at. Sunday, November 13, 2011. Having crossed the river Elbe Blucher orders his corps to advance west until they make contact with the French. Both corps suffered light casualties.

Walking Northern Spain

Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Summary of our Tour of Northern Spain. This was our most ambitious tour so far. We had gained a lot of confidence from self drive holiday of the previous year to Portugal and Spain. Many of the battlefields we explored then were return visits to ones we had seen with Holts Tours. However this time it would all be new. Burgos was the only one which was really easy. The castle overlooks the city, and is easy to find. From the castle it is easy to walk the area of the siege.

Old Wargame Rules

The 1813 campaign has been running for more than a year, and I am running out of space on the original blog. Over the past few months I have been making new maps using Profantasy, and this has prompted me to revamp the whole series of the 1813 Campaign blogs. You can find the new blog at. Sunday, 7 June 2009. You will see from the photographs above that the Fre.

1813 Campaign - Halle

Thursday, February 25, 2010. The French withdrew over the river Saale and left the Russians in possession of the right bank. Despite this setback the French still controlled Halle, which was the objective of the campaign. This would make the French the nominal victors of the campaign. Neither side suffered a dramatic defeat, and both sides would require some time to regroup and reorganize before they could under take any further operations.

Walking Aspern and Austerlitz

Tuesday, May 3, 2011. The last morning of our visit was warm and sunny. We had to drive to Vienna to return the hire car and catch our flight back to UK, but we did not have to be there until 3pm. Not long enough for a proper walk, but long enough to pay a visit to Schlapanitz. The town has grown a lot since 1805, but the old town remains much as it was then.
