Pedaling West II - Sharon Hawley. To cross America a second time, I chose the southern states, beginning in Florida, ending home in California. I completed two-thirds of the journey in 2013 to Del Rio, Texas, and the final section in 2014. There, you can pan and zoom. Monday, May 12, 2014. I rested in the wind-shadow of its huge building. I came to Jacumba on Historic Old Highway.
During the month of August, 2012, I will stay in Kanab, Utah, and hike the depths of some narrow, fascinating canyons. Sunday, August 19, 2012. Ed Faulkner, born 1932. Peter Brown, born 1935. Several stars from those old shoot-em-up westerns rode into town for the event, and I played the part of a sneaky photo grabber. Here I am with two stars. Notice their birth dates and my lack of a birth date and how well preserved we are.
Thursday, June 28, 2012. How do the rest of you take leavings? I left Tennessee, after a seven-year itch that stopped itching. I left New Mexico after a six-year itch that was really scratching Tennessee. I left Ventura to escape from work and go places like Dunsmuir, California. And tomorrow morning, I will leave Dunsmuir. Monday, June 25, 2012.
Sharon Hawley visits the back-country of Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Thursday, June 30, 2011. I watched the waterfall and the creek for some time, perhaps fifteen minutes, until they stopped flowing. Here is the place where the waterfall was. As the storm moved away, sun played on its clouds, painting their edges with silver and their undersides in burnt ochre. I felt like I had been transported to another world and returned safely to earth. Wednesday, June 29, 2011.

Sharon Chooses High Elevation and High Temperature. Thursday, August 26, 2010. I walked into another canyon today, another mouth gaping open toward the great valley, another alluvial fan like an out-hanging tongue where deposits of river wash slope down and spread like the full skirt of a sitting woman. But in the mouth of this canyon, I see not the dry rocks of yesterday, but rather some green things, alien to this unvegetated world.
Sharon Hawley Flies North for the Winter. See a Google Map of International Falls, Minnesota. Sunday, January 24, 2010. Ten days after leaving International Falls, I realize I did not say a proper goodbye or convey to anyone listening that I have enjoyed your company. My going was too soft and too hard, too happy returning and too hard to leaving. What I found is mostly put down in these sixty-two blog posts. It is not what I expected. Thank you for reading and for your comments. Tuesday, January 12, 2010.
Sharon Hawley visits Oakridge, Oregon, a small town that nearly died a few years ago because the logging and lumber industry died. Now it tries to reinvent itself, somewhat successfully in summer, but not in winter. Thursday, March 10, 2011. Tomorrow morning I will head for Southern California, away from the dense, damp woods of the Oregon Cascades. Leavings are hard; I seldom feel good about them. A wave came to Oakridge, rose and broke, and some say it can happen again.
