A Loggers Dream

Sharon Hawley visits Oakridge, Oregon, a small town that nearly died a few years ago because the logging and lumber industry died. Now it tries to reinvent itself, somewhat successfully in summer, but not in winter. Thursday, March 10, 2011. Tomorrow morning I will head for Southern California, away from the dense, damp woods of the Oregon Cascades. Leavings are hard; I seldom feel good about them. A wave came to Oakridge, rose and broke, and some say it can happen again.

Thursday, June 28, 2012. How do the rest of you take leavings? I left Tennessee, after a seven-year itch that stopped itching. I left New Mexico after a six-year itch that was really scratching Tennessee. I left Ventura to escape from work and go places like Dunsmuir, California. And tomorrow morning, I will leave Dunsmuir. Monday, June 25, 2012.
