Namun pada usia 18 tahun sebuah bencana terjadi, ia mengalami cidera punggung yang serius saat sedang berenang. Dokter mengatakan ia tidak bisa bermain sepakbola lagi, bahkan kemungkinan besar akan lumpuh akbibat cidera itu. Tidak ada tindakan operasi atau terapi yang bisa menyelamatkannya. Hidup Kaka hancur berantakan saat itu, kecintaannya pada sepakbola demikian besar, kini semua harus berakhir, bahkan sisa hidupnya harus diisi dengan menjalani kelumpuhannya.
