Saturday, January 31, 2009. The ground below South street was farm land. There were a few houses on South Main street some distance down. The population was about 1,200, and we seldom met strangers or those we did not know at least by sight. Houses were of frame, two stories in height, and the style of living much plainer than now. Most of the houses had gardens attached, which added much to the comfort of the residents, giving them fresh vegetables during the summer.
Friday, November 28, 2008. On the west corner of North Main and the Square was a large red house occupied by Thomas Duane as a tavern and store. He removed to Pittston in 1805. On the east corner on Market street was a long, one-story frame house then occupied by James Ebbert as a dwelling and watchmaker shop. There were no other dwellings that I remember on the Square at that time. On the north side were located Hoff, Rutter and Scott.
Saturday, February 7, 2009. On Public Square was the Market House, later used to house the fire engine, and was itself burned in June 1855. Also the Academy, erected 1804. The Court House, 1804. And the County Offices, a building of stone, where the records were kept. On the southern part was located the old frame court house.
Saturday, December 6, 2008. Upon the north east corner of North Main and the Square, in 1804, was the residence and office of George Griffin. On the east side of the square was the Parrish tavern on the site where later was the Fort Durkee Hotel. The Parrish tavern was burned on February 22, 1830. On the corner of East Market and Public Square was a frame house, the home of the Honorable David Scott. At the east corner of Publ.
