As a class they were generally respected and were often called to hold public office when it was a distinction to hold public office, as marking the esteem and respect and confidence in which one was held by his fellow citizens.

After his father death in October 1804 Arndt took full control of the milling, lumbering, merchandising, and other businesses, including the building of the Durham boats for the navigation of the Susquehanna. With continued success he built an addition of a hall and two spacious parlors onto tavern in 1812. By 1818 he sold the tavern to Thomas Morgan. He died at Green Bay, Wisconsin, June 11, 1861, age 80.
Monday, March 9, 2009. Steele was born in Hanover in 1801. He was a son of Joseph Steele. He was sheriff of Luzerne county from 1841 to 1844, and represented this county in the senate of Pennsylvannia from 1856 to 1859. His first wife was Susan B. Crisman, a daughter of Abram Crisman, a son of Frederick Crisman, who came to Hanover as early as 1788 and built the red tavern. 1801 - Born Hanover Township, son.

Saturday, March 14, 2009. Back to Hotel and Taverns. Jacob Bertels was born in 1807 at Lansdale, Montgomery Co. , and died at Quakertown, Bucks Co. , December 19, 1886, aged seventy-nine years. He was a resident of Luzerne county, Pa. , from 1840 to 1863. , of which he was captain two years, when he resigned on account of disability.

Sunday, March 8, 2009. Two prisoners have been for some time confined in the gaol in this town on criminal charges. Seward for passing counterfeit money - Dodge for stealing. When Seward was taken, a lady was his companion. She was secured for a few days, and then, as nothing appeared against her, was liberated, and has since lived in the neighbourhood.
