Its true the fastest way to get better is to play with and against the best players and most of the time they are the older kids. In my experience Ive found that kids of a particular age who are exceptionally talented can compete at a level that is 1 or 2 yrs older than they are. Even if its in a youth league in-house or travel team? Its OK .
