The UMNO elections in 1987 saw Shahrir aligning himsel with the Tengku Razaleigh - Musa Hitam group, or what was often referred to as Team B by political observers. Both Tengku Razaleigh and Musa Hitam lost in their respective bids for presidency and deputy presidency of UMNO. However, Shahrir manage to retained his post as member of the UMNO Supreme Council. In may 1987, Shahrir was dropped from the Cabinet. On which he writes to espouse his political view and opinions.
