In times of slavery, slave owners were usually unnecessarily brutal to their slaves; some of them would beat them to death or nearly to that stage. Slaves became angry but felt helpless so they began to think of ways to rebel. The slave owners and overseers thought of the songs as regular everyday spirituals.
