Monongah Middle School Home of the Lion. Monday, March 16, 2009. In 1914 the Board of Education decided that a high school should be established in Monongah. Matthews was employed as the principal and was the only teacher that year. The school met in one room of the Thoburn Grade School with nineteen pupils enrolled. In the fall of 1961 the Marion County Board of Education decided to establish a Monongah Junior High School for grade.
