Karelia is now again open to visitors, so we paid dearly for a Russian visa and set off to see for ourselves what remained of a land about which we both had heard so many stories. Markus Lehtipuu was our trusted companion on the trip and proved an invaluable travel partner with his comprehensive grasp of all things Karelian.
