El Fuerte es un Monumento Nacional que forma parte del complejo de fortificaciones construidas por la Corona Española en el siglo XVII, para la defensa de Valdivia. El Museo, en tanto alberga textos informativos,mapas,grabados, maquetas y reproducciones de ambientes que recrean la época en que se fundaron Valdivia y Niebla, la vida de sus primeros habitantes y los últimos días del imperio español.
