It is the first day of school. Jennifer is wearing her new unisex button-up shirt from American Apparel, and feeling highly aware of this fact as she walks into school. She is 30 minutes early and feels confused about what to do. She walks up to a school friend named Ziggy and asks him how his summer was. Good, he says, just worked, hung around, got drunk, you know.
The newness of school feeling exciting.
At lunch, Jennifer sits down at a table with her best friend Matt. Hi, says Jennifer, how is your first day of school so far? Seems okay, I think. It is loud in here, says Matt, there are like, a million people or something. Matt nervously laughs a little. Jennifer looks at her tofurkey sandwich and takes a bite. Why is it so loud in here, says Matt. Why is it so loud in here, says Jennifer.

It is after school and Matt and Jennifer are drinking smoothies. I feel generally positive about this school year, Matt says, not like, concretely, but. Me too, says Jennifer. They allow silence for a couple of minutes. This is a good smoothie, you are good at making smoothies, Matt says. Thank you, says Jennifer, they are vegan.
Are we going to feel severely depressed this winter, Matt says, his voice quivering slightly. Jennifer tries to process the question by thinking about tommorow, and the next day, and the day after that and mentally projects herself into what she is imagining as roughly five months from now. She moves toward Matt and leans her head against his shoulder. Oh, hah, Matt whispers. It is okay, says Jennifer.
