The value of observing what we do. When I started teaching in the MA TESOL Program at Teachers College, I was assigned a class called Observation. The purpose of the course was to help teachers decide where they would like to practice teach. In groups of six or so, we visited a wide range of classes at many levels in public schools, adult programs and English language institutes in New York City. They made audio recordings of the classes, transcribed them and developed a coding system to try to make sens.
