Given the choice between visiting Wanstead Flats alone at dusk or dawn in search of Little Owl. Bleary-eyed and attempting to lace up my boots, I could hear the call of a distant Little Owl. But oddly the call seemed to be coming from across Centre Road and in the opposite direction I would have imagined - being alone in the dark can play odd tricks on the mind.

19 hours spent to finally get the White-rumped sandpiper. Up and out this morning by 5 am to have one more go for the White-rumped sandpiper, we thought we had it last Sunday but after 4 hours we gave up not being able to say for certain that we had it ticked. So back we go on Saturday and spend 9 hours to no avail. Brian was able to try again on Sunday and got lucky with a couple of good views of it,so Jimmy and I had to give it a go today. Just a record shot of the WRS.

Monday, 25 July 2016. Juv Yellow-Legged Gull, Creekmouth 23716. Had a look locally on the Thames for Yellow legs today, firstly at Rainham where several adult birds were on the foreshore. Had a couple of flyby juvenile birds fly east, but none hung around for any photo opportunities. The afternoon proved more productive with this cracking juvenile first picked up on the tanks at Beckton sewage works before flying around almost checking me out along the creek.
