Neznám druhého města v Čechách, které by tak překvapovalo jako Budějovice České; pěkná je starobylá Plzeň, zajímavé jsou pestré Prachatice, zvláštní je průmyslový Liberec, ale Budějovice jsou zcela svými, zcela originálními vzdor vší smíšenině historické a moderní, nemám pro ně zkrátka jiného jména, než že jsou Florencií mezi venkovskými českými městy. Ne pro půvab vůkolí, ne pro památky všeho umění, ale pro jistou nepopiratelnou líbeznost svou.
