El Salvador se encuentra en Belice, uno de los dos países centroamericanos, que carecen de ambas costas en el Océano Atlántico o el Mar Caribe, y el único que tiene sólo la costa del Pacífico. El interior es montañoso y la costa hay una estrecha llanura costera, que es más ancha en el centro del país, en la desembocadura del río Lempa y Bahía de Jiquilisco. Dentro del centro también hay una meseta.
