A 2500kw High speed Main Propulsion engine suffered failure by seperation of the piston Crown. Shown below is the detached crown seized in the liner. Damage occurred to an extent that the conrod was able to exit the liner space and impact and break several adjacent structures. Shown below is the conrod sitting on an adjacent bearing cap. Damage can be seen to liner, adjacent entablature structure and next unit.
Description of the salient parts. Modern engines designed for increasing power to weight ratios are reliant on not only stronger materials but also on careful design. Each component design must not only be optimised for its own purpose, but also in some cases, to provide strength to the overall structure. The entablature not only supports the cylinder liner and head it also creates areas for cooling water and scavenging air.

Water - Fixed Fire fighting system. The capacity of the fire pumps is calculated as a product of the breadth, depth and length of the vessel but need not exceed 25m. For cargo ships of 150 gross tons or more, a minimum of one fixed power pump and one portable pump are to be provided. For cargo ships of less than 150 gross tons, one portable pump or alternative , is to be provided. which meets the criteria listed later. The suction head in ope.
Faults associated with Spur and helical gearing. Hammer like action between teeth caused by variations in pitch or torsional vibration , may be negated by nodal drives. The mechanism for pitting is poorly understood . One theory is that it starts below the surface and parallel to it . When extended to surface oil under hydrodynamic pressure is forced in. Most severe on the pitch line or just below it , but may also be found on the dedendum. New gears suffer initial .
