Started 66 years ago as a teaching and performance institute, it has grown into a contemporary symbiosis affirming the role of creativity in culture, researching into our origins and reaching out to the unsaid or unthought of. Darpana believes that art is a language that is universal.

Renowned dancer and choreographer Mrinalini Sarabhai is single-handedly responsible for taking classical Indian dance beyond the shores of India and making Bharatanatyam a dance form that is revered and respected throughout the world. The idea of the Vikram Sarabhai Festival was born a few years after his tragic and early death in 1971. He was the co-founder of Darpana with Mrinalini Sarabhai, and its main supporter. He was a great lover of the arts, and a connoisseur. It was felt that the best way to remember and pay homage to him would be to have a yearly multi- arts festival in his home town, Ahmedabad. Through this festival, Darpana tries to communicate the utter futility of violence and the need for plurality in our society.
Darpana Communications was setup in 2001 by Yadavan Chandran, a film major whose interests in developmental communications brought him to the shores of the Academy. Under his guidance, Darpana Communications or DCOM, has produced more than 3000 hours of television programming on various social issues that have been broadcast.
