Postcards from Sussex

Saturday, 17 March 2018. Tudor groats and a bag seal. Last Sunday on a club dig I was fortunate to find two Tudor groats, the second time I have found two hammered coins in one day. Both are very worn as is usual with coins of this period. In addition they have suffered from plough damage. They are both about 25mm in diameter. Groats were worth 4 pence. The first coin is a Mary groat. MARIA D G ANG FRA Z HIB REGI. Mary, by the Grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland. Philip and Mary groat.

There is a feather floating like an exquisite hovercraft over the balcony tiles this morning. Its beauty and its engineering tell me of its Grand Creator, Jehovah of armies. And a certain use in the world no doubt,.

Secret Nature

Is the largest Hairstreak to be found in the British Isles. It is a local species that exists in self-contained colonies that breed in the same area season after season. Despite this, it can prove extremely elusive, since it spends much of its time resting and basking high up in tall trees and shrubs. Which flies at the same time. Is also often mistaken for betulae.
