Cheshire Cat in Guadeloupe

Cheshire Cat in Guadeloupe. Tuesday, June 26, 2007. Dawn over Deshaies in. We reached Deshaies early in the morning too early to go into the anchorage, so we lingered outside for a couple of hours until it was light enough to see everything. Here we found a nice little French influenced town. There were narrow streets with no pavement. And American dollars away for this island. The small attractive bay and village. Frequently a house door opens directly onto the pavement, with a couple of feet of tile.

Wednesday, June 27, 2007. Cheshire Cat and crew ready to sail on the high seas for the first time. The seas were pretty huge as well. It was at least three days before he felt better, and was really able to take his turn with boat work. Nick at the wheel, mostly recovered. When waves came into the cockpit the water came up to our knees - we frantically bailed it out as best we could using buckets. Later I discovered I had lost my lovely Tim H.

Cheshire Cat in Bequia

Sunday, June 24, 2007. Easter Regatta is an opportunity for the people from nearby islands to visit Bequia for the racing competitions and a big boisterous beach party. There are no engines on these boats, lots of enthusiastic manpower is needed to get them into the water. Local fishermen and families spent days and even weeks sprucing up their sturdy working boats, cleaning bottoms and painting the hulls in bright racing colours. The fishing boats are constructed in a single basi.

Cheshire Cat in Dominica

Saturday, June 23, 2007. We trailed behind in the countercurrnet behind Sue and John on Saltscar. Just outside Portsmouth Bay we saw whales spouting in the distance; they entertained Sue and John but moved away before we could get very close. We had also heard that dinghies and engines are frequently stolen, and that boats get burgled from time to time. We, however, avoided all those troubles and had a grand visit. Banana plantation the fruit covered with bags for protection.
