Businesses expanded after the release of the series on videotape, shortly after its original broadcast. It generated discussion in newspapers, on radio, and in living rooms across the country. In 2000, the documentary On Our Own Terms mobilized hundreds of national and regional organizations dealing with end-of-life care issues. It helped thousands of families connect with resources and helped frame a difficult subject in an accessible and thoughtful manner.
In 2005, CBS announced that its season finale for the situation comedy Everybody Loves Raymond was a Monday night record breaker for the year. With 33 million viewers, it attracted the highest ratings the network earned that year. New Technologies and Reduced Barriers to Entry.

Nonfiction films that present social issues are being viewed in record-breaking numbers. These successful films tend to fall into one of two camps they are usually either highly charged partisan stories aimed at inspiring true believers or they are entertainments. Several recent reports examine the rapid changes occurring in the media industry from various perspectives. Dramatic industry changes are occurring because commercial interests understand that a great deal is at stake over the next few years.
