Between 1840 and 1860, thousands of enslaved Africans traveled the Underground Railroad to freedom in Canada. Born enslaved, Harriet Tubman found freedom via the Underground Railroad and became one of its conductors. Winner of the Black Web Award for Best Black Canadian Site, 2008.

Following her arrest for sitting in the wrong theatre section, Viola Desmond fought against racial discrimination. Clarence Big Miller was considered one of the great jazz musicians of his time.
