Why should we value the arts? Education is a privilege not a right. Two weeks ago, as I walked across campus to get a cup of coffee after teaching a class to some pretty poorly prepared students, I was accosted by a student protestor whose rallying cry began with the claim that education is a right not a privilege.
Friday, January 16, 2009. Moms and Other Unappreciated Heroes. My mother is not perfect, nor is any mother. However, the sacrifices she has made and continues to make should overshadow any insignificant flaw she might have. I still have a difficult time showing her just how much I appreciate her, but I hope she knows that I do see all that she has given up so that her children could have a better life. A republic, if you can keep it. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
