1980년대에 처음 묵주기도를 시작했던 린 바우만 신부님의 묵주에서 산 다미아노 십자가를 볼 수 있다. 노랑과 주황의 밝은 색으로 빛나는 이 십자가 모양의 이콘은 예수 그리스도에 관한 많은 이야기를 우리에게 전하는 듯하다. 이 이콘에 대한 이야기는 성 프란시스의 젊은 시절에서 시작된다. 그가 자주 갔던 곳이 산 다미아노 교회였는데, 성벽 밖 벼랑에 반쯤 무너진 채 방치된 곳이었다. 이 폐허에 실물 크기로 십자가에 달리신 예수의 아이콘이 달려 있었다. 1206년 여름 어느 날 그 근처를 걷다가, 안으로 들어와 기도하라는 영적인 이끌림을 느끼게 되었다. 이 내면의 소리에 따라, 그는 계단을 내려와 어두컴컴한 작은 예배당에 들어와, 낯익은 십자가 앞에 무릎을 꿇고, 주님께서 무슨 분부를 하실지 기다렸다. 나를 위해 이 집을 다시 지어 주렴. 십자가 위에는 천사들에 둘러 싸여 승천하시는 주님의 모습이, 손 주변에는 그분의 놀라우신 희생에 대하여.
